CCC yet to recover Tk 50m in Sagarika cattle market lease dues

The Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has yet to recover nearly Tk 50 million in outstanding lease payments for the Sagarika cattle market, more than six weeks after the payment deadline, raising concerns over revenue collection.

According to CCC sources, Mira Marine secured the lease for the city’s largest Eid-ul-Azha cattle market with the highest bid of Tk 80.8 million. Including VAT and other taxes, the corporation was expected to receive about Tk 101.1 million.

Under the lease agreement, the company was required to pay 80 percent of the total amount before the market began operations. However, it paid only Tk 45 million, leaving nearly Tk 50 million unpaid even after the Eid season.

CCC officials said the unpaid amount has created uncertainty over revenue collection and that legal steps are being considered to recover the dues.

The issue comes amid previous allegations of irregularities involving the leasing and management of the same market. Officials said earlier arrangements had resulted in lower-than-expected revenue, while a substantial amount of outstanding dues from previous operations also remains unrecovered.

A senior CCC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the matter has been referred to the mayor, who instructed authorities to take the necessary legal measures to recover the outstanding payment.

CCC Secretary Mohammad Ashraful Amin confirmed that the lessee has yet to clear the full lease amount. He said the corporation is working to recover the dues and warned that action, including cancellation of the lease in accordance with the rules, could be taken if the payment is not made within the stipulated time.

Repeated attempts to contact Mira Marine owner Fazle Alim Chowdhury for comment were unsuccessful.
